Friday, December 22, 2017 – If you grew up in Louisiana like I did, then you’ve most likely picked up a few habits that you won’t find in any other state. Here are 11 undeniable habits that no Louisianian can ever unlearn. But to be honest, would we really want to unlearn them?

1. Holding doors open for strangers

It’s the polite thing to do!

Our mamas raised us right.

They’re the perfect go-cup year round.

4. Spelling things with “eaux”

…and not thinking that’s weird.

5. Saving newspapers

You never know when you’ll need them for your next crawfish boil.

6. Asking someone where they went to high school – This is my high school, John F. Kennedy Senior High School in New Orleans.  I was the dance team captain and am the girl on the right with no hat on!

We all do it!

7. Seasoning everything with Cajun spice.

Tony’s, Zatarain’s, Slap Ya Mama… everyone has a preference.

8. Giving directions using bodies of water as turning points

Head towards the river… go down the bayou… we’ve all used these types of terms to give directions.

9. Calling everything a coke

You want a coke?
Sure.
What kind?
Sprite.

10. Measuring distance by time

Instead of saying something is 10 miles away, you’re probably going to tell them it’s about a 10-15 minute drive.

11. Scheduling major events around football games

Priorities.

These things, and so much more, are what makes Louisianians a most blessed culture! I believe that good manners, politeness, kindness, generosity and family love are all things Louisianians are raised with.  It’s not necessarily something we were taught but something we learned from examples set by our parents and grandparents, to those in our circle of family and friends all doing these things very naturally!
