2021, 2025, My life

01..17.26 2,000+ photos from my blog posts are G O N E!

I had over 19,000 photos in my WordPress storage which was nearing the maximum I could store. I decided to selectively eliminate a good number of photos to create some new space for future post’s photos.

Something went wrong and I deleted over 2,000 of the 19,000 photos in storage.

The process to selectively eliminate the photos is tedious but I’ve done it before so I chose to do it this way again. After working on it a couple of days I only had around 100 photos gone.

Then I discovered a lot of unattached photos. I don’t really know what “unattached photos” means but I thought it must mean that they were not attached to any post. Just extras taking up space.

So the something that went wrong was me deleting 2,000 photos that were actually in posts since I misunderstood what unattached really means.

I still don’t know what unattached means but trashing those eliminated them from a lot of posts which are now left with no photos. That isn’t a real problem in some posts. But posts about the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls need those photos and they are now gone:(

There have recently been a lot of interest by people going through my blog reading one at a time starting back in 2012 reading them all. Unfortunately a lot of the missing photos came from posts back in those early days. I can’t imagine what they thought about how awful the post looks with a little square graphic in the middle of a big blank space. This is what it looks like when a photo is missing.

What a missing picture looks like on a phone
What a missing picture looks like on a laptop screen

I am now trying to figure out the best way to make that look better. It will take time but I treasure these posts about traveling and my life so I’ll begin this newest unexpected project very soon.

Y’all come back now ya hear!
