She came at noon
because some kinds of loneliness choose the heat over the eyes of others
because shame prefers the middle of the day
when no one else is there to see it
a woman with a jar
and a life that had already taken more from her
than it ever gave back
five times she had tried
to drink from a well called love
security
respect
attention
kindness
each one promising
this will be the one
this will finally satisfy you
and each one leaving her thirstier
than before
so she came again
because even the broken still need water
even the rejected still get thirsty
but there is a thirst deeper than the body
and she carried that one too
a quiet ache
a lesser-than feeling
a soul that knew something was missing
but didn’t know where to find it
if I find in myself a desire
that nothing in this world can satisfy
the most probable explanation
is that I was made for another world
and there He was
sitting at the well
waiting
not avoiding her
not ignoring her
not disgusted by her story
waiting
a Jew speaking to a Samaritan
the Holy One
looking straight at her
He didn’t lower His voice
He didn’t look away
He didn’t pretend not to know
He spoke
and in that moment
He honored her with His attention
He saw her
every misstep
every what if
every place she had gone
looking for something to fill her
and instead of turning away
He leaned in
if you knew who was asking you for a drink
you would have asked Him
and He would have given you living water
living water
not something you have to come back for
not something that runs dry
not something that leaves you empty again
but something that fills you
so deeply
you never thirst the same way again
and suddenly the conversation
wasn’t about water anymore
it was about her
and it was about Him
and He made it personal
the same way He does with you
go call your husband
and the truth came out
not to shame her
but to free her
He told me everything I ever did
and somehow
that didn’t crush her
it healed her
because for the first time
someone saw all of her
and stayed
it was not too late for her
and it is not too late for you
she left her jar
the very thing she came for
no longer mattered
because when your soul is finally met
you stop chasing the things
that never could satisfy you
she ran
not hiding this time
not avoiding eyes
but telling everyone
come see the man
who told me everything I ever did
and they came
first because of her words
and then because they saw for themselves
she had been known for less
for failure
for rejection
for the story people whispered about
and now she was known
for pointing people to Jesus
saved for less than an hour
and already a witness
because when living water fills you
it overflows
Nicodemus came at night
with everything to lose
she came in the day
with nothing left to protect
and Jesus met them both
but oh
how quickly He changed her story
in an instant
God can change everything
do you believe that
you meant it for evil
but God meant it for good
He has never lost control of your story
even when it felt like you were just surviving it
He sees you
not the version you try to present
not the cleaned up version
not the one you hope people believe
the real you
and He is still sitting at the well
waiting
offering something
that will not run dry
so the question is
if you have tasted living water
what are you still drinking
that is leaving you empty
what are you going back to
that cannot satisfy you
because there is a well
that never runs out
and a Savior
who is not afraid of your story
He will tell you the truth about yourself
and reveal Himself to you
and when He does
you will finally understand
you were never meant
to live thirsty
